About this wine

Character

Lean, taut and clearly defined. The wine relies on energy and drinkability rather than power, while remaining serious: spice and earthy depth carry it, not fullness.

Terroir and origin

Olek Bondonio farms seven hectares in Barbaresco, including Roncagliette, Starderi and Altavilla. His Cascina La Berchialla sits at the top of the Roncagliette cru, on hills the family has tended for over 200 years. This landscape shows in the nose: leather, undergrowth and dry brushwood, with stony, almost rocky nuances and a faint smoky note.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Nebbiolo, dry, 13.5% vol. Biodynamic principles shape the work in the vineyards, quietly and without fuss. The style follows from this: cool, precise, worked for transparency rather than extract.

On the palate

The fruit stays in the background: plum, rosehip, elderberry and sour cherry sit behind black pepper, juniper and liquorice, with an ethereal note of pine needles and a hint of roasted coffee. The tannins give grip and contour without ever feeling hard, while the acidity keeps the wine juicy and almost weightless. The finish is bright and mouth-watering, with spicy minerality lingering long after.

Highlights

Bondonio was a professional snowboarder before returning to the 200-year-old family estate; in the cellar, a skateboard halfpipe stands between the barrels. His great-great-great-grandfather was among the founding members of the Produttori del Barbaresco in 1894. There is no tasting room and no marketing, and seven hectares yield only limited quantities.
