About this wine

Character

A Barolo of classic style: dark cherry and dried rose up front, followed by tar and undergrowth. The tannin is firm, the acidity keeps the wine upright. In magnum format it matures more slowly, gaining depth along the way.

Terroir and origin

Castiglione Falletto sits on a hill 350 metres high in the Langhe, where Carlo Vietti founded the winery in 1873. Today the estate farms 75 hectares, including Brunate, Lazzarito, Ravera, Cerequio, Monvigliero and Villero. The soils, calcareous and partly sandy, partly clay, give the wine structure as well as finesse.

Grape variety and vinification

Nebbiolo ripens late and brings high acidity and firm tannin, its aromas shifting between blossom and earth. Ageing takes place in large wooden casks that give the wine room to develop without imposing toasted notes.

On the palate

Dry and powerful, with grippy, firm tannin and lively acidity. Red cherry, violet and liquorice carry through, and the finish remains long and mineral-driven.

Food pairings

Substance on the plate: braised beef cheeks, tagliatelle with truffle, wild boar ragù or braised leg of lamb. Also porcini risotto, duck breast with a rich sauce and aged Parmigiano Reggiano.

Special features

From 1961, Alfredo Currado vinified grapes from individual vineyards separately; Rocche di Castiglione became one of the region's first cru wines. Since 1974 the bottles have featured original artworks by various artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. The estate has belonged to the Krause family since 2016, and in 2025 Doctor Wine named Vietti Azienda dell'Anno.
