About this wine

Character

Power and coolness stand side by side here on equal terms. The wine feels intense and expressive, yet remains fresh, with a dense, refined texture and a long finish.

Terroir and origin

The Brunate vineyard lies in the municipality of La Morra, on the south-facing slope toward Barolo, at 300 to 400 metres above sea level. The soil consists of Sant'Agata marl, rich in limestone and clay. The vines average 50 years of age, trained using the Guyot system, with around 4600 plants per hectare.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September 2021. After three to four days of cold soak and with 20 to 25 percent whole berries, maceration lasted 22 days in stainless steel, with the cap simply submerged. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, followed by 24 months of ageing in large oak.

On the palate

The nose is cool and dark: dry wood, spice, dried herbs and a chalky-limestone note, alongside fresh mint, a hint of lovage and red flowers. On the palate, chalky tannin sits within red-berried and dark, fleshy fruit, accompanied by black tea, pipe tobacco, orange peel, balsamic and rosemary. Generous and precise at once, long and intense.

Food pairings

With braised beef cheeks in Barolo, truffle risotto, game terrine with cranberries or aged pecorino.

Special features

Brunate is one of the nine crus that Vietti farms across 75 hectares. From 1961, Alfredo Currado began vinifying individual vineyards separately, at a time when Barolo was still bottled without regard to grape origin; since 1974, the bottles have featured original artworks by artists.
