About this wine

Character

The Castiglione is Vietti's interpretation of a classic Barolo: approachable and open, yet distinctive and full of elegance. Fruit and spice stand in perfect balance, while the acid structure draws the wine out along its length.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from a variety of Barolo cru vineyards across different communes within the entire growing zone. The soils consist of calcareous marl, with composition varying by site.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Nebbiolo. The vines are trained on wire trellises using Guyot pruning, at an average planting density of around 4,500 vines per hectare; the average vine age ranges between 10 and 45 years. The wine is dry and reaches 14.5% vol.

On the palate

On the nose, wild strawberry, sour cherry and barberry, restrained rather than loud, framed by green walnut and roasted hazelnut. Beneath that, damp forest floor, undergrowth and moss, along with black pepper, juniper and plenty of sage, the whole underscored by ferrous, bloody notes. The wine shows a fleshy character, with a present and well-anchored tannic structure and a velvety mouthfeel. The fruit aromas cling well to the bitter notes; the finish brings back the savoury forest and herb tones.

Food pairings

Braised venison shoulder with savoy cabbage and pommes dauphine. For a vegetarian option, try oyster mushroom tacos or oven-roasted aubergine with Mediterranean herbs and fried garlic.

Special features

Vietti was founded in 1873 in Castiglione Falletto. From 1961 onward, Alfredo Currado began vinifying grapes from individual vineyards separately; since 1974, the bottles have featured original artwork by artists. In 2025, the estate was named Azienda dell'Anno by Doctor Wine.
