About this wine
Character
The Barolo Cerequio 2020 from Vietti is a Nebbiolo from a single south-facing parcel in the commune of Barolo, built with precision and polish. Fine-grained tannin and a bright edge of acidity balance each other, while the wine stays cool, silky and composed.
Terroir and origin
The Cerequio MGA holds great importance in Piedmont. This south-facing site at 320 metres altitude covers around one hectare; calcareous marl defines the subsoil, topped by abundant clay. The vine age is given as 37 years. Vietti, founded in 1873 in Castiglione Falletto, farms 75 hectares across sites such as Brunate, Lazzarito, Ravera, Monvigliero and Villero.
Grape variety and vinification
Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September. Gently pressed, the must ferments with the skins for about a month in steel tanks, with the cap punched down continuously. After transfer to oak casks, malolactic fermentation takes place there. Ageing lasts almost 30 months, mostly in large oak casks, supplemented by small barriques.
On the palate
Deeply dark and floral on the nose, with hibiscus and violet at the fore. Behind this the fruit builds: morello cherry, blackberry, plum, a touch of sloe. Earthy and vegetal notes follow with celeriac and above all beetroot, joined by undergrowth, pine needles, pepper and juniper. On the palate it is velvety, dense and cool, the tangy fruit building without ever pushing forward. It lingers long, with a touch of eucalyptus in the aftertaste.
Food pairings
Grilled lamb chop with artichoke bottoms and olive-thyme nage, skin-seared cod with beetroot crème and toasted hazelnuts, or warm bulgur with black olives and mint.
Special features
Bottled without any filtration, designed for bottle ageing that the 1500 ml magnum format supports perfectly. 14.5% vol., dry. Since 1974, the estate's bottles have featured original works by artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 2025, Vietti was named Azienda dell'Anno by Doctor Wine.
