About this wine
Character
The Barolo DOCG Cerequio 2021 from Vietti is a fine, noble Nebbiolo from the commune of Barolo that remains reserved in its youth. The nose shows a slight reduction and the accompanying cassis note, along with mint, wild strawberry, plum and cherry, with pronounced floral influences.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the historic Cerequio vineyard, one of the most significant in the entire Barolo growing area. Vietti's plot lies in the commune of Barolo at around 320 metres, faces south, and is planted at a density of about 4600 vines per hectare. The average vine age is around 36 years, and the soil is calcareous and clay-rich with marl from Sant'Agata.
Grape variety and winemaking
Pure Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September 2021. A three- to four-day cold maceration was followed by a 27-day skin contact period in stainless steel, with 20 to 25% whole berries and a cap that was simply submerged rather than punched down. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, followed by 24 months of ageing in large oak.
On the palate
Firm, taut, dense and nervy, with insistent acidity, a clear chalky texture and chewy tannins. The fruit currently recedes almost entirely. Depth, power, energy and length are already present, just still veiled: this wine needs time.
Distinctive features
Vietti was founded in 1873 in Castiglione Falletto. In 1961, Alfredo Currado began vinifying grapes from individual vineyards separately; today the estate farms 75 hectares across nine crus, including Cerequio. Since 1974, the bottles have featured original works by artists. 14.5% vol., dry.
