About this wine
Character
The Lazzarito 2021 shows itself young and still unapproachable: little fruit, but structure, firmness and a maturity that runs deep rather than wide. The 14.5% ABV comes through as a slight warmth in the fruit, without blurring the contours of this dry-vinified wine.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the Lazzarito vineyard in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, an amphitheater-shaped plot facing southwest at 260 to 390 metres above sea level. The soils are calcareous and clay-rich, the vines average 42 years old, planted at a density of around 4500 vines per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Nebbiolo. A three- to four-day cold maceration with 20 to 25% whole berries is followed by around three weeks of maceration in stainless steel, during which the cap of skins is simply submerged. Malolactic fermentation takes place in used barriques, followed by 24 months' ageing in large oak.
On the palate
On the nose, stems, undergrowth, earth and ferrous rock, along with a touch of coal, violet flowers and a hint of blueish fruit. On the palate, clear, driving acidity carries the wine, the tannin is firm, the texture densely woven and precise. Saline and mineral through to a long, energetic finish.
Distinctive features
Vietti, based in Castiglione Falletto, has existed since 1873. Alfredo Currado began in 1961 to vinify grapes from individual vineyards separately; Lazzarito is now one of the estate's nine crus across 75 hectares. Since 1974, the bottles have featured original artworks by various artists. In 2025, Vietti was named Azienda dell'Anno by Doctor Wine.
