Barolo DOCG Monvigliero 2021 1500ml Magnum

The Barolo DOCG Monvigliero 2021 from Vietti is a dry Nebbiolo from Piedmont that shows depth and lightness at once. Its elegance already stands fully formed, and the 14.0% ABV never comes across as weight.

The Monvigliero hillside vineyard lies in Verduno at around 240 metres, facing south to southwest, on limestone- and clay-rich soil with Sant'Agata marl. It has long been regarded as the most important cru of Verduno and one of the most valuable in the entire Barolo winegrowing area. The vines average 44 years old, with a density of around 4,500 vines per hectare. Vietti, based in Castiglione Falletto, has been vinifying single vineyards separately since 1961.

Pure Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September. After a three- to four-day cold maceration, the wine fermented with 60% whole berries, possible because this is the only vineyard where almost all the stems reach full ripeness. Maceration lasted 20 days in stainless steel, with the cap simply submerged. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, followed by 24 months of ageing in large oak.

The nose offers blossom, ripe cherry and a gently warm hint of chocolate, alongside orange, garden herbs and lemon zest. On the palate, a fine, chalky tannin carries a delicate sweetness of bright red and slightly dark fruit. The wine remains persistent, energetic and perfectly balanced.

Since 1974, Vietti's bottles have featured original works by artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 2025, the estate was named Azienda dell'Anno by Doctor Wine. This Monvigliero is bottled as a 1500ml magnum.
