About this wine
Character
Bright cherry red with clear transparency. The nose is fine and floral, with ripe cherry and a slightly warm hint of chocolate, joined by orange, garden herbs and lemon zest.
Terroir and origin
The hillside vineyard of Monvigliero has long been regarded as the most important cru of Verduno and one of the most prized in the entire Barolo growing area. The vines face south to southwest at around 240 metres above sea level, on calcareous, clay-rich soil with Sant'Agata marl. Their average age is 44 years, with a density of around 4,500 vines per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September. A three- to four-day cold maceration was followed by 20 days of maceration in stainless steel, with the cap simply submerged. 60% of the berries went into the tank whole. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, followed by 24 months of ageing in large wood. 14.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Elegant and deep, carried by the effortlessness of the 2021 vintage. The 60% whole clusters lend structure, the tannin is fine and chalky. This is joined by a fine sweetness of bright red fruit and a touch of dark fruit. The wine remains persistent, energetic and balanced.
Food pairing recommendations
With rosy roasted saddle of venison, braised beef, pheasant with truffles or aged Castelmagno.
Special features
Monvigliero is the only vineyard of Vietti where the stems ripen almost fully; this is what allows the high proportion of whole berries. The estate in Castiglione Falletto has existed since 1873, and Alfredo Currado created one of the first Barolo crus here in 1961.
