About this wine

Character

A dry red wine with a dense core and pronounced structure. On the nose, dried rose petals, ripe dark cherry, leather and truffle, underscored by a smoky trace of tar.

Terroir and origin

Vietti is based in Castiglione Falletto, a medieval village on a hill 350 metres high in the Langhe. Carlo Vietti founded the winery in 1873; today the estate farms 75 hectares, including Brunate, Lazzarito, Ravera, Cerequio, Monvigliero and Villero. In 1961 Alfredo Currado was the first to vinify the grapes of individual vineyards separately, among them Rocche di Castiglione.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Nebbiolo, the late-ripening grape of Piedmont that only develops its structure in the finest sites. As a Riserva, the 2017 vintage spends significantly longer in the cellar before leaving the estate. The wine is vinified dry and reaches 14.5% Vol.

On the palate

Powerful and multi-layered, carried by fine-grained, densely woven tannin and taut acidity. The alcohol lends warmth without masking the structure, and the finish lingers long. A wine with years ahead of it.

Food pairings

Beef braised in Barolo, tagliata of beef fillet or venison goulash. Dishes with freshly shaved white truffle pair just as well as long-aged Parmigiano Reggiano.

Notable facts

Since 1974 the bottles have carried original artworks, created among others by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Claudio Bonichi and Pietro Cascella. In 1967 Alfredo Currado saved Arneis from extinction and has since been regarded as the father of Arneis. In 2016 the Krause family took over the winery; in 2025 Doctor Wine named Vietti Azienda dell'Anno.
