About this wine

Character

The Bourgogne "Clos de la Perrière" Blanc Monopole AOP 2023 is a Chardonnay from a three-hectare monopole vineyard enclosed by an old stone wall. In the glass it shines lemon yellow with subtle silvery highlights. The nose is tightly knit and densely woven, yet remains light on its feet: skin and flesh of vineyard peach, fresh pineapple and Galia melon, underscored by Greek yoghurt, alongside orange mint and toasted pine nuts.

Terroir and origin

The Clos de la Perrière lies in the village of Corpeau, south of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The soils consist of sandy-silty limestone, and the southern exposure allows for early ripening. Behind the wall grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Aligoté; the wines from this site are classified as Bourgogne. The estate itself, a former Cistercian monastery, was founded in 962 by monks from the Abbey of Cluny.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Chardonnay. Willy Roulendes has run the domaine since 2008 and converted it to biodynamic farming: work is done by hand and with horses, the vines average around 40 years of age, and yields are a modest 30 hectolitres or so. The grapes are hand-harvested, and fermentation proceeds spontaneously with native yeasts in cement tank. The wine then ages for twelve months in oak barrel with a maximum of 10% new wood and is bottled unfined, unfiltered and with minimal sulphur.

On the palate

The medium-weight body fills out the palate and creates space in which the yellow-fleshed fruit lingers. A subtle acidity carries it through to a bone-dry, mouth-watering finish. 13.5% vol., dry.

Special features

A monopole vineyard held exclusively by the domaine. In the cellar, the estate is increasingly moving away from small barriques and ageing in larger vessels instead, so the wine's delicate character remains unembellished.
