About this wine
Character
A dry Chardonnay that needs no padding: clearly defined, brimming with lively energy, built slender at 13.0% Vol.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils farms 12.6 hectares in the Côte de Beaune, with parcels in Meursault, Volnay and Pommard. The estate was expanded in the 1960s by grandfather Hubert, mayor of Meursault for 25 years. Ageing takes place in 18th-century cellars, originally built for the Hospices de Beaune. In the vineyard, Pierre-Henri Rougeot works biodynamically and by hand, using tractors only minimally.
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay, fermented spontaneously with its own native yeasts. Throughout the entire ageing process, Rougeot adds no sulphur, deciding only at bottling depending on the vintage. He uses the 228-litre Burgundy barrels sparingly, keeping the share of new oak low, and does not practise bâtonnage. Nor is the wine filtered or fined.
On the palate
Pale straw yellow in the glass, with lemon, green apple and white peach on the nose, backed by a delicate floral note. The wine stays linear, carried by lively acidity and a saline pull through to the long finish.
Distinctive features
In 2016, Pierre-Henri Rougeot ended his father Marc's supermarket business and shifted the estate towards quality wines. Recurring premox in certain parcels was the impetus for the move to organic farming. The diagonally striped labels identify the cuvées aged without sulphur.
