About this wine
Character
This Pinot Noir from Pommard seeks clarity rather than power. Aged without added sulfites, the 2023 vintage shows the fruit unadorned: raspberry and morello cherry, alongside a floral note of rose petal and fine spice. Dry, 13.0% ABV.
Terroir and origin
The "Clos des Roses" is the estate's monopole vineyard in Pommard, a plot in sole ownership. It forms part of the 12.6 hectares in Meursault, Volnay and Pommard that grandfather Hubert Rougeot expanded in the 1960s; he served as mayor of Meursault for 25 years. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and by hand, with only minimal use of tractors.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. The grapes remain uncrushed and whole, as Pierre-Henri Rougeot ferments them as whole clusters, spontaneously with the estate's own yeasts. Ageing takes place in 228-litre Burgundy barrels with a low proportion of new oak, in 18th-century cellars originally built for the Hospices de Beaune. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, and no sulfites are added at any stage of ageing.
On the palate
Silky texture, juicy mid-palate, fine-grained tannin. Lively acidity keeps the wine upright, with a long, distinctly saline finish and a cool minerality.
Food pairing recommendations
With roasted pheasant breast, pink-roasted saddle of lamb and tender veal fillet. Equally good with boeuf bourguignon, dishes with braised wild mushrooms and aged Comté.
Highlights
In 2016, Pierre-Henri Rougeot ended his father Marc's supermarket supply business and repositioned the estate toward quality wines. The diagonally striped labels have since marked the cuvées aged without added sulfites.
