About this wine
Character
The Bourgogne Côte d'Or "Les Grandes Gouttes" 2022 is a dry Chardonnay that Pierre-Henri Rougeot bottled without any addition of sulphur. Linear and full of energy, with a saline length and 13.0% vol. The magnum format slows ageing and keeps the wine fresh for longer.
Terroir and origin
The "Les Grandes Gouttes" site lies in the environs of Meursault, where Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils farms 12.6 hectares, with additional parcels in Volnay and Pommard. The estate's holdings were expanded in the 1960s by grandfather Hubert, mayor of Meursault for 25 years. Work is carried out entirely by hand, with only minimal use of the tractor. Rougeot's credo: there can be no good wine from bad soil.
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay, fermented spontaneously with the estate's own yeasts. The designation "Sans Sulfite Ajouté" is meant literally: no sulphur throughout the entire ageing process. The wine matures in 228-litre Burgundy barrels with a low proportion of new oak, without bâtonnage, without filtration and without fining. Pierre-Henri Rougeot learned this reductive cellar approach at Domaine de Montille.
On the palate
Dry and taut, carried by vibrant acidity and saline minerality. On the nose, lemon zest, green apple and white blossom, followed by a nutty note and a hint of wet flint. The finish remains clean and precise.
Food pairing recommendations
With oysters, sole in butter and goat cheese. Also pairs well with poultry in a light jus and simply prepared seasonal vegetables. Serve lightly chilled and give the wine time to open in the glass.
Special features
In 2016, Pierre-Henri Rougeot ended the estate's supermarket business in favour of biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention. The cuvées aged without sulphur are recognisable by their diagonally striped label. Ageing takes place in 18th-century cellars, originally built for the Hospices de Beaune.
