About this wine
Character
A dry Burgundy Chardonnay made with no added sulphur. That demands perfectly healthy fruit at harvest and meticulous work in the cellar — and you can taste it: pure fruit, plenty of drive, nothing polished.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils is based in Meursault and farms 12.6 hectares with parcels in Meursault, Volnay and Pommard. Grandfather Hubert, mayor of Meursault for 25 years, had expanded the estate in the 1960s. Pierre-Henri Rougeot works biodynamically, tending the vines exclusively by hand, with only minimal use of tractors. His creed: "There can be no good wine from bad soil."
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. Spontaneous fermentation with the estate's own yeasts, aged in 228-litre Burgundy barrels with a low proportion of new oak, no bâtonnage. It is neither fined nor filtered, and no sulphur is added at any point, not even at bottling. That's what the Sans Sulfite Ajouté notation on the diagonally striped label marks — at Rougeot, it identifies precisely this style of winemaking. 13.0% ABV.
On the palate
Pale golden yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose, lemon, ripe apple and yellow pear, with a hint of hazelnut. Creamy texture, vibrant acidity, long mineral finish.
Special features
In 2016, Pierre-Henri Rougeot ended his father Marc's supermarket supply business and shifted the estate towards quality wines. The deciding factor was recurring premox, the premature oxidation of his white wines. Vinification takes place in the 18th-century cellars originally built for the Hospices de Beaune.
