About this wine
Character
A red-fruited Pinot Noir that draws its impact from clarity rather than oak. Slender in build, lively, with a saline length on the finish.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils is based in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune and farms 12.6 hectares with plots in Meursault, Volnay and Pommard. Pierre-Henri Rougeot works biodynamically, tending the vineyards exclusively by hand, with only minimal use of tractors. His credo: "There can be no good wine from bad soil." The Burgundian limestone soils give the wine its mineral backbone.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir. The grapes remain unde-stemmed and ferment spontaneously as whole clusters with the estate's own indigenous yeasts, in the historic 18th-century cellars once built for the Hospices de Beaune. Ageing takes place in 228-litre Burgundy barrels with a low proportion of new oak, without bâtonnage, unfined and unfiltered. No sulphur is added throughout the entire ageing process; only at bottling does Rougeot decide, depending on the vintage.
On the palate
Bright, transparent ruby red. On the nose, juicy red cherry, wild raspberry and an earthy spice. The palate stays slender and upright: silky tannin, vibrant acidity, joined by a saline minerality that carries the dry finish. 13.0% vol.
Food pairing recommendations
Pink-roasted duck breast, coq au vin, roast quail and fine mushroom dishes. Lightly chilled, the wine also pairs well with pan-fried char.
Special features
In 2016, Pierre-Henri Rougeot ended his father Marc's supermarket-supply business and steered the estate toward quality wines. The diagonally striped labels identify his cuvées aged without sulphur.
