About this wine

Character

A Brunello with drive and depth: dark cherry, violet, dried herbs, alongside earthy notes of forest floor and leather. Powerful without becoming heavy, the tannin fine-grained, the acidity lively. In Magnum it ages more slowly, and patience pays off here.

Terroir and origin

The Piaggione vineyard faces east-southeast on fossil-rich, calcareous soils. Beneath lies marl stone 60 to 80 million years old, calcareous marl on which Sangiovese thrives. Podere Salicutti is located in Montalcino, around 35 kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Tuscany's Mediterranean climate. Piaggione is the vineyard closest to Felix Eichbauer's heart.

Grape variety and vinification

Sangiovese, single-varietal and the only grape variety grown on the estate's 4.5 hectares. Every vine is tended individually, every grape cluster hand-selected. Cellar master Gianni Fabbri vinifies only Sangiovese, and the Brunello ages for a long time in wood.

On the palate

Dense and juicy, with red cherry and forest berries up front. The tannin grips without drying, and the acidity carries the wine into a long, mineral-driven finish.

Food pairings

Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, rack of lamb with rosemary or duck breast. Aged Pecorino Toscano and dishes with porcini mushrooms also pair well.

Special features

In 1996, Salicutti became the first winery in Montalcino to receive organic certification; since 2022, the estate has worked biodynamically according to Demeter standards, with the Demeter logo on the label. Salicutti belongs to the respekt-BIODYN association of 36 European winegrowers. Annual production is around 15,000 to 20,000 bottles. Donkeys, bees, and chickens live among the vines, olive trees, and fruit trees. In the cellar, a turquoise glass column designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas pierces the vault.
