About this wine
Character
The Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2023 is Sabine and Felix Eichbauer's understated wine: a pure, classic Sangiovese that combines depth and elegance with airy freshness, self-assured without ever showing off.
Terroir and origin
Podere Salicutti farms 4.5 hectares in Montalcino, 35 kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vines grow on 60- to 80-million-year-old marl, calcareous soils. Grapes for the Rosso come from the Brunello sites: mainly Sorgente, with its heavy soils at 450 metres, plus Piaggione, fossil-rich limestone with an east-southeast exposure, and Teatro, the cool, late-ripening south-facing site at 520 metres.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Sangiovese, hand-harvested, with yields of around 40 hl/ha. Winemaker Gianni Fabbri ferments spontaneously in concrete tank at up to 28 °C and leaves the wine on the skins for around 35 days. This is followed by two years in 10-hectolitre Mittelberger botti, then bottle ageing. 13.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
On the nose, cherry and cherry stone, nut, rosehip and pomegranate, a touch of blood orange, plus violet, warm yeast and sun-warmed forest floor. The palate opens smooth and silky, the fruit ripe and fresh, mainly in red tones. A gently sweet tannin provides structure, the vibrant acidity keeps it drinkable, and the finish has length.
Special features
In 1996, Salicutti became the first estate in Montalcino to receive organic certification. Since 2022 the estate has farmed entirely biodynamically according to Demeter guidelines and belongs to the respekt-BIODYN association of 36 European winegrowers. Chickens peck between the vine rows, and donkeys graze beneath the olive trees. Annual production is between 15,000 and 20,000 bottles.
