About this wine

Character

A Brunello that brings together power and clarity: densely built, mineral-driven, yet never heavy. Piaggione is the vineyard Felix Eichbauer relies on, and its soils give the Sangiovese substance and seriousness.

Terroir and origin

The Piaggione plot faces east-southeast on fossil-rich, calcareous marl that is 60 to 80 million years old. Podere Salicutti farms just 4.5 hectares of vines in Montalcino; the Tyrrhenian Sea lies 35 kilometres away and helps shape the Mediterranean climate. Chickens peck between the vine rows, donkeys graze beneath the olive trees, and bees hum in the orchard.

Grape variety and vinification

Exclusively Sangiovese, the only grape variety grown at Salicutti since 1990. Every vine is tended individually, every bunch selected by hand; cellar master Gianni Fabbri oversees the winery, where the estate produces roughly 15,000 to 20,000 bottles per year in total. The wine undergoes long ageing in wood.

On the palate

Dry and juicy, with ripe cherry, blackberry and dried rose, underpinned by leather, undergrowth and spice. The tannin is ripe and firm, the acidity taut, the finish spicy and long.

Distinctive features

In 1996 Salicutti became the first estate in Montalcino to receive organic certification; since 2022 Sabine and Felix Eichbauer have farmed entirely biodynamically under Demeter guidelines, with the Demeter logo featured on the label. The estate belongs to the respekt-BIODYN association of 36 European winegrowers. Sabine Eichbauer, an architect, renovated the estate in 2018; a turquoise glass column by Massimiliano Fuksas runs through the cellar.
