About this wine
Character
A red wine that holds power and elegance together: dark fruit, cool herbal spice and a juiciness that carries the whole wine.
Terroir and origin
Clau de Nell is located in Ambillou-Château in Anjou, 90 metres above sea level and 120 kilometres from the Atlantic. The 45- to 55-year-old vines root in loamy silt soil over sandstone as well as in red flint over tuffeau. Yield stands at 40 hectolitres per hectare. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2000.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Cabernet Franc. The grapes were hand-harvested into 12-kilo crates, destemmed and fermented over 30 days with only occasional pump-overs. Twelve months on fine lees followed, in five- to seven-year-old Burgundian pièces, then six months in a large oak cask.
On the palate
On the nose, blackberry, cassis and green bell pepper, alongside a cool, herbal impression. Then dark fruit and polished tannin, with lively acidity keeping the wine in motion, graphite marking the long finish. Serve decanted at 16 °C in a large glass.
Food pairings
Grilled beef loin with ratatouille, rack of lamb with okra and polenta, or gnocchi with melted tomatoes and rosemary.
Special features
No wine was made on the estate for three years, until Anne-Claude Leflaive took it over in 2008 with her husband, Christian Jacques. After her death in 2015, Christian Jacques and cellar master Sylvain Potin, a former sommelier who joined in 2009, continue the work. The label carries the Demeter logo.
