About this wine

Character

This white wine draws its tension from acidity and salt rather than from richness. At 12.5% ABV it stays lean, with an aromatic profile that is herbaceous-green and yellow-fruited: ripe yellow apple, pear and kaffir lime, joined by grilled pineapple, passion fruit, lemongrass and a touch of cold smoke.

Terroir and origin

The DOC Monreale lies in the hinterland of Palermo. Case Alte belongs to the municipality of Camporeale and takes its name from the hill on which the Vaccaro family has grown grapes for three generations. The vines grow on clay and sand at elevations of up to 500 metres, where warm days and cooler nights let the grapes ripen slowly.

Grape variety and vinification

Catarratto, an autochthonous Sicilian grape variety, stands here without any blending partner. Giuseppe Vaccaro has run the estate on organic principles since the new winery was built in 2010, working in the cellar with minimal intervention to preserve the variety's typical aromas and natural freshness.

On the palate

The entry is stony and linear, then the citrus fruit takes over: lemon, lime and grapefruit as zest, juice and rind, also in candied form. The interplay of tart and acidic elements is invigorating, with a light mineral film lingering on the teeth. The finish is saline and clear, with citrus fruit dominating and herbs only echoing faintly.

Food pairings

Pairs well with grilled fish, spaghetti alle vongole and crudo di mare, as well as with vitello tonnato, goat cheese or a lemon and fennel salad.

Distinctive features

Since 2010, all plots have been farmed without synthetic chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers; hedgerows and flowering strips promote biodiversity in the vineyards.
