About this wine

Character

A highly aromatic, mature and dense Chardonnay that reveals its minimal-intervention approach: open, unadorned and vibrant. Power and tension sit alongside charm and sensuality. Vinified dry, 13.0% vol.

Terroir and origin

The Clos Béru in eastern Chablis is the house's monopole vineyard: five hectares at 300 metres altitude, enclosed by a 13th-century wall. The plot faces due south, not very steep but sloping and very stony, on typical Kimmeridgian soil scattered with fossilised oyster shells. The monks of the time drew the boundaries along the terroir, which is why the Clos has the shape of a skewed trapezoid.

Grape variety and vinification

Chardonnay from biodynamic farming under Athénais de Béru, with horses rather than heavy machinery working the vineyard. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with the estate's own yeasts. In the first year the wine matures in tonneaux, then in tank; it was bottled with minimal sulphur by Gaëlle Ribé at the new winery.

On the palate

Plenty of yellow fruit on the nose: pear, cellared apple, peach, ripe lemon and mandarin, with hints of lemongrass, ginger, verbena, a touch of beeswax and quince down. Open and mature on the palate, yet highly complex. The acidity feels silky at first, then grows increasingly driving, its energy ever more perceptible. A generous amount of dry extract carries crisp and fleshy green and yellow fruit, with the finish bringing oyster shell, salt and minerality that lingers long.

Distinctive features

The Clos Béru holds no premier cru classification: the vineyard was leased out at the time of Comte Eric de Béru's early death, and the family showed no interest in seeking classification. The label carries the Demeter logo. The 3000 ml double magnum allows the 2022 vintage to age more slowly and protectively.
