About this wine
Character
Not a powerhouse, but a wine of finesse: aromatic depth, fine-grained tannin, transparency to its origin. Jean-Louis Trapet, seventh generation of the domaine, puts it as a principle: guide, never force.
Terroir and origin
The Chambertin vineyard lies at the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin. Trapet farms just under two hectares there, split across three parcels, with vines that are in part a hundred years old. The 2023 vintage brought warmth and early ripeness to Burgundy.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. For his Grand Crus, Jean-Louis Trapet ferments 50 to 100 percent whole clusters, with new oak kept to at most 50 percent. In the cellar, work is done by gravity with minimal intervention. At 13.0 percent ABV, the alcohol stays in the background, and the wine is dry.
On the palate
Dark cherry, cassis and blackberry, alongside rose and violet, cinnamon and clove, with a hint of undergrowth. The body is silky and multilayered, the tannin finely etched, and the freshness carries through to a long, mineral-driven finish.
Food pairings
Braised beef shoulder with truffled potatoes, wild duck with cherry sauce, saddle of venison or coq au vin; for cheese, mature Époisses or Comté.
Special features
Since 1996, Jean-Louis Trapet has farmed the domaine biodynamically, out of conviction rather than as a label. The Chambertin is one of the estate's three Grand Crus. The Guide des meilleurs vins de France awards it three stars, the highest rating.
