About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that places finesse above power. "I seek neither colour nor tannin," says Bruno Clavelier, who in the late 1980s took over the estate of his grandfather Joseph Brosson on the outskirts of Vosne-Romanée, and bottled his first vintage under his own name in 1992. What he seeks is transparency: wines of crystalline purity, in which the vigneron's hand remains invisible.
Terroir and origin
La Combe d'Orveaux is among the premier crus of Chambolle-Musigny, one of five communes across which the estate's 6.5 hectares are spread. The vines root deep into limestone subsoil. Most stocks were planted in the 1930s and 1940s; the oldest are today over 80 years old and naturally yield very little. The estate has been organic-certified since 1999 and farmed biodynamically since 2005.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir Fin, the traditional Burgundian clone. Fermentation takes about three weeks in open, conical oak vats, with indigenous yeasts and up to 30 percent whole clusters; rather than mechanical extraction, pigeage is done by hand. Following malolactic fermentation in spring, the wine spends 16 to 18 months in barrels from Tronçais and Allier, only a third of them new.
On the palate
Floral elegance and a silky texture define this cru, made dry at 13.0% vol. The oak does not come to the fore, and the low yields of the old vines give the wine its depth.
Distinctive features
Each climat is vinified separately. The crus are neither fined nor filtered, sulphur use remains minimal, and bottling is done under protective gas. All the estate's wines carry the designation "Vieilles Vignes".
