About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir built on transparency. «I look for neither colour nor tannin,» says Bruno Clavelier; what he seeks is transparency, finesse and pure terroir. The texture is correspondingly silky, and the aromatics of violet and dark cherry are drawn with great clarity.
Terroir and origin
Les Noirots is a Premier Cru of the commune of Chambolle-Musigny on the Côte de Nuits. The domaine farms 6.5 hectares in Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Aloxe-Corton, vinifying each climat separately. The vines are largely from the 1930s and 1940s, rooting deep into the limestone subsoil and naturally yielding low crops; the oldest are now over 80 years old.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir Fin, the traditional Burgundian clone that Clavelier plants almost exclusively. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in open, conical oak vats, with up to 30 percent whole clusters depending on vintage and parcel; manual punching down (pigeage) replaces mechanical extraction. Around three weeks of fermentation and malolactic fermentation in spring are followed by 16 to 18 months in barrels from Tronçais and Allier, only a third of them new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
On the palate
Fine-boned, with lively acidity and fine-grained tannin. Black cherry and red forest berries, along with undergrowth and a hint of smoke; the finish remains long and precise. 13.5% vol., dry.
Special features
The label indicates biodynamic farming: the domaine has been certified organic (Ecocert) since 1999 and has worked entirely biodynamically since 2005. Sulphur additions remain minimal, and bottling takes place under protective gas.
