About this wine
Character
The ZIND 2022 is a dry white wine made from chardonnay and auxerrois, grown in Alsace. The nose is intense: mango, lime, orange, ripe apple and ginger, with a fine tobacco note. With exposure to oxygen, a chalky note and flinty aromatics emerge.
Terroir and origin
In 1989, two years after acquiring the Clos Windsbuhl, the estate planted auxerrois and chardonnay in the coolest part of the clos, where it borders the forest. The shell-limestone soils give the wine its structure and its longevity.
Grape variety and vinification
Both varieties have been blended together from the start. Since 2001 the wine has been released as Zind "Vin de France," since chardonnay is not permitted under AOC Alsace, where it remains reserved for Crémant d'Alsace. It was fermented in traditional large wooden foudres and rested on full lees until bottling. 12.5% Vol.
On the palate
Polished and taut, carried by pronounced citrus fruit, an invigorating acidity and a deep, stony minerality that grips the palate. The finish is long and intensely saline, with fine tannin pointing to ageing potential. Decant and serve not too cold, in a larger glass.
Food pairing recommendations
With langoustine, shellfish sauce, fennel and celeriac purée, with truffled salt-crust poularde with morels, green asparagus and potato gratin, or with shiitake congee with rayu: equally at home with classic French cuisine and Asian-inflected umami dishes.
Special features
Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares and converted the first five hectares to biodynamic viticulture in 1996. The Humbrecht family has been growing wine since 1620, and the Clos Windsbuhl is a monopole vineyard of the estate.
