About this wine

Character

A purist Riesling that speaks of salt, smoke and stone. The nose is smoky, iodine-like and saline, with tart apple skin, stony and slightly nutty tones; alongside these stand quince and yellow plum, salted lemon and a touch of verbena.

Terroir and origin

The Meerspinne is an old parcel extracted from the Gimmeldinger Mandelgarten and classified as Grosses Gewächs; it ranks among the estate's VDP.GROSSE LAGEN. A massive limestone subsoil is topped by topsoil of limestone and variegated sandstone marl. The A. Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen farms 17 hectares, exclusively classified sites, and has worked biodynamically since 2003.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling, with yields here typically around 40 hl/ha. The whole clusters were crushed, then, after a three-to-six-hour maceration, slowly pressed and spontaneously fermented. Until bottling, the wine matured on lees and fine lees in stainless steel and in a large traditional wooden cask.

On the palate

Vigorous and citrusy, stony, with fine extract sweetness, a hint of juicy stone fruit and a silky texture. The spicy, saline and iodine-like notes persist, and the wine feels sinewy and taut.

Food pairing suggestions

Sole with lemon butter, pan-seared turbot, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, tuna tataki, roasted veal and mature Comté.

Highlights

Steffen Christmann took over the family estate, founded in 1798, in 1996 as the seventh generation, and has served as president of the VDP since 2007; his daughter Sophie Christmann, a graduate of Hochschule Geisenheim, joined in 2018. The estate is certified to respekt-BIODYN and EU organic standards and is a member of La Renaissance des Appellations. Riesling accounts for 70 percent of the planted area.
