About this wine

Character

A Riesling of power and cool tension: fresh, juicy, pulsating, yet austere and zesty. The fruit remains bright and citrusy, underscored by dark spice.

Terroir and origin

The Vogelsang lies above Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, at altitudes of up to 260 metres, sloping south at a gradient of up to 50 percent. The soil consists of shell limestone formed more than 200 million years ago. Once renowned, the site had fallen into obscurity; in 2017, after years of highly conventional farming, it returned to the Christmanns through a land exchange, and they converted to biodynamic farming immediately.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Riesling, harvested at a yield of just 40 hl/ha. The juice spent several hours on the skins, fermented spontaneously and at fairly warm temperatures, then aged in a large oak cask. 12.0% ABV, dry.

On the palate

Taut and sinewy at first, then a light, charming extract sweetness and a hint of creaminess, framed by saline minerality. The acidity feels crystalline, the wine cool and firm, wild in its aromatics of stone, tobacco and herbs.

Food pairings

With grilled turbot with herb butter, with scallops on pea purée, as well as with mature Comté or Munster.

Special features

For several vintages, this wine was bottled as a VDP.Ortswein under the name Neustadt V.; it is now released as a Grosses Gewächs. The A. Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen has existed since 1798 and is run by Steffen and Sophie Christmann; biodynamic since 2003, certified to respekt-BIODYN and EU organic standards. The Vogelsang is among the estate's VDP.GROSSE LAGEN.
