About this wine
Character
Les Noyers 2020 is the Cabernet Franc–dominated single-vineyard wine of Closerie Saint Roc. Deep cherry red in the glass, with cool fruit, silky acidity and a firm tannic backbone on the palate. A Bordeaux with contour and tension, built to be lively and transparent.
Terroir and origin
The Les Noyers vineyard covers 2.9 hectares and sits at an altitude of 90 to 102 metres in Puisseguin. The soils consist of clay (30%), silt (39%) and sand (31%), resting on an Asteria limestone bedrock. The site is farmed biodynamically, with agroforestry and permaculture between the vines. The walled estate was revived in 2013 by Pascal Amoreau, whose family has run Château Le Puy since 1610.
Grape variety and vinification
80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot. After hand-harvesting, the wine ferments spontaneously, matures for 18 months in used oak barrels and is bottled without fining or filtration. Horses plough between the vine rows, and after fermentation the wine is stirred according to the lunar calendar.
On the palate
The nose shows a subtle perfume of ripe cassis, ripe dark cherries and a touch of blueberry yoghurt, along with leaves, herbs, a hint of peat and ripe green notes. On the palate the fruit stays cool and juicy, the acidity silky, the tannin giving grip and length. Already very enjoyable to drink.
Food pairings
With duck breast with honey, oranges and peppers, game terrine with juniper or classic lasagne.
Special features
At Closerie Saint Roc, every parcel is vinified separately and bottled as a single-vineyard wine. Les Noyers is the voice of Cabernet Franc among them.
