About this wine

Character

A red wine that speaks of its origin through coolness rather than weight: garnet red and slightly translucent in the glass, with crisp red and dark berry fruit on the nose alongside crème de cassis, underscored by stone, dry wood and dry foliage. At 12.0% ABV it stays light-footed without ever feeling thin.

Terroir and origin

The Les Pins vineyard covers 1.3 hectares and sits at an altitude of 100 to 102 metres. Down to a depth of one metre, the soils consist of 50% silt, 41% clay and 9% sand, above a bedrock of fossil-rich Asteria limestone. The walled estate in Puisseguin, twelve kilometres from Saint-Émilion, was brought back to life by Pascal Amoreau in 2013; his family has run Château Le Puy since 1610.

Grape variety and vinification

50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot, a parity that gives Cabernet Franc plenty of voice. Following hand-harvesting, the wine fermented spontaneously and aged for 18 months in used oak barrels. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined.

On the palate

The cool, juicy berry fruit carries through, buoyed by clear, vibrant acidity. The tannin is chalky, the texture translucent, the wine easy-drinking and already developed enough to bring pleasure right now.

Food pairings

Leg of lamb with porcini and chickpeas, pâté en croûte and, for a vegetarian option, a Comté quiche.

Highlights

The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, incorporating agroforestry and permaculture, with horses ploughing between the vine rows. After fermentation, the wine is stirred rhythmically according to the lunar calendar. Each parcel of the estate is vinified separately and bottled as a single-vineyard wine. Decanter named Closerie Saint Roc among its "Top 10 Bordeaux Producers to Watch" in 2020.
