About this wine

Character

Taut and lean, with the fruit of the Viognier held in a tight corset. Fine acidity keeps the wine in motion, giving space to its herbal, ethereal side. A Condrieu that reveals its origin and sheds the grape variety's usual attributes.

Terroir and origin

Le Tinal is a mere 0.17-hectare plot in the commune of Verin in the northern Rhône. The subsoil consists of ferromagnesian mica-schist and granite. The vines are 35 years old, with yields around 35 hectolitres per hectare.

Grape variety and vinification

100 percent Viognier doré from massale selection. The must undergoes cold maceration and is pressed under carbon dioxide, with vinification taking place in used barrels at around 20 °C. The wine then ages for twelve months in small oak barrels from Tronçais, the Alps and the Caucasus. Maison Stephan works without additives, pesticides, fungicides or filtration, with sulfur levels close to zero.

On the palate

On the nose, mango, grilled pineapple and passion fruit, alongside grapefruit, lychee, preserved peach and ripe pear, plus acacia blossom, date, candied ginger, thyme, lemon balm and coriander seed, with vegetal notes of fennel and artichoke. Dry, 12.5 percent alcohol, with a citrus and ginger spice finish.

Food pairings

With pan-seared John Dory with saffron sauce and clams, seared prawns with orange butter or saffron risotto with orange zest.

Maison Stephan is the father-and-son estate of Jean-Michel and Romain Stephan in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu, working steep slopes with a natural, additive-free approach. Le Tinal comes from this single small plot and is bottled in 500-millilitre format.
