About this wine

Character

A purist white wine from the northern Rhône Valley: taut, clear, with fine herbal spice and yellow fruit. The nose is extract-rich, recalling a long-steeped herbal tincture and tonic, with chamomile, herbal tea and yarrow. With aeration, citrus, the white pith of Amalfi lemon and crushed oyster shells emerge, followed by fully ripe honeydew melon, peach and elderflower.

Terroir and origin

Maison Stephan is based in Tupin-et-Semons; the vineyard plots lie in Côte-Rôtie, 4.5 hectares of steep terraces on granite and gneiss, farmed by Jean-Michel Stephan since 1991 and, since 2017, together with his son Romain. The south-east-facing terraces gather warmth, while cool northerly winds keep ripening in balance. Work is largely done by hand, with horses tilling the soil and winches used on the steepest plots, at a yield of 30 hl/ha.

Grape variety and vinification

A blend of 40% Viognier, 30% Roussanne and 30% Marsanne. The grapes are gently pressed, ferment spontaneously and are aged for several months in stainless steel, with no wood. 12.5% vol., dry.

On the palate

A very juicy entry, then saline and taut, with great precision. The wide-reaching, piquant arc of acidity sets the direction, while the texture stays creamy and the contour fresh. Forceful and vibrating, the wine flows into a cool, lingering finish with a solid bass note.

Special features

Maison Stephan has worked consistently along natural lines since 1995 and has made its wines without oenological additives, including sulphur, since 1997. Accordingly, this white wine is classified as Vin de France.
