About this wine
Character
A Condrieu that favours slenderness and tension over fullness. The entry feels restrained, the fruit is delicate, with floral overtones layered above. What carries the wine is its freshness and a saline minerality that gives the Viognier definition. Youthful and sinewy in character, with excellent prospects for the near future.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on the granite-marked steep slopes above the Rhône in the commune of Vérin. The granite and biotite soils force the vines to root deep; the plantings date from 1986 and are farmed organically. Maison Stephan, built up since 1991 by Jean-Michel Stephan and run jointly with his son Romain since 2017, works largely by hand on the steep slopes of the northern Rhône.
Grape variety and winemaking
100% Viognier, hand-harvested. Fermentation happens spontaneously with the grapes' own yeasts, after which the wine matures for twelve months in oak barrels. It is bottled without fining or filtration — hence the silky-matte haze in the lemon-yellow glass. The house vinifies its wines without oenological additives, a method that demands precision in the cellar.
On the palate
On the nose, lemon blossom, citrus zest and Moroccan preserved lemon, alongside peach blossom and white peach flesh, a handful of green apricots, grated ginger and top notes of jasmine and white blossom. On the palate, a slender flow, defined body, not an ounce of fat: exceptional freshness and saline minerality shape its course through to the finish.
Special features
The 500 ml bottling comes from an estate with 4.5 hectares of vines and deliberately low yields of 30 hl/ha. The wine is 12.5% vol. and dry.
