About this wine
Character
A wine of two faces. In the glass, deep purple red with violet reflections and a black core; the nose lavish and dark: black Amarena cherry and dark chocolate open, followed by cured meat, black pepper, and leather, accompanied by cassis, blackberry jelly, and wet slate.
Terroir and Origin
Cornas is located in the Northern Rhône, where Domaine du Coulet farms 20 hectares on steep, south-facing terraces carved into the granite bedrock. Matthieu Barret leads the estate in the seventh generation; since 2012, mules and horses have been pulling the implements through the vines. The average age of the vines is between 40 and 55 years, with yields at 23 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Syrah, vinified dry, 13.0% ABV. Barret’s credo is 100 percent grape, minimal sulphur, no fining, no filtration. Since 2006, he has been experimenting with concrete eggs and diamond-shaped tanks to preserve the fruit without oak influence; as of the 2017 vintage, barriques disappeared entirely from the cellar.
On the Palate
Here comes the surprise: no baroque fullness, but freshness. Transparent sour cherry carries the wine, the arc of acidity is long and sweeping, giving room to the minerality, which adds further tension. Aromatically, it oscillates between fruit and gentle spice, without either side taking over.
Special Features
Barret worked organically from his very first vintage and converted to biodynamic farming in 2002; green spaces surrounding the vineyards foster biodiversity. The 1500 ml magnum format comes from the bottling at the estate on Rue du Ruisseau in Cornas.
