About this wine

Character

A Côte Rôtie that brings together density and fragrance. In the glass, dark purple with violet reflections and a black core, topped by a bright, floral nose: citrus notes, blossom, violet and clove over violet-toned fruit, with the oak barely noticeable. With air, sloe, charcoal and leather emerge, without losing the fresh underlying tone.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow on a steep slope over migmatite, granite and biotite. The vineyard was planted in 1896 and replanted in 1989, with yields between 15 and 20 hl/ha. Jean-Michel and Romain Stephan have jointly run Maison Stephan since 2017, farming their steep slopes naturally and without oenological additives.

Grape variety and vinification

40 percent Sérine, 40 percent Syrah, 20 percent Viognier. Sérine is an indigenous relative of Syrah from pre-phylloxera vines, which the estate preserves through massale selection. After a cool 24-hour pre-fermentation maceration, a cool carbonic maceration follows over 20 days in the spirit of Jules Chauvet, then 24 months of ageing in old Tronçais oak tonneaux. The wine was neither filtered nor fined and only minimally sulphured. 13.5% ABV, dry.

On the palate

Even more layered than on the nose. The wine opens with violet pastilles, joined by juniper, rose, bresaola and clove. Lively acidity, very fine tannin and deep minerality carry the density of the violet-toned fruit; the wine remains tonic and juicy throughout.

Distinctive features

The 20 percent share of Viognier gives the wine its bright, fragrant character, while the old Sérine lends depth of colour. From a production made by hand on steep slopes and without any additives.
