About this wine
Character
A complex, powerful and spicy Côte Rôtie at 12.5% vol., whose stature comes from fruit, spice and structure rather than from oak. Fairly deep violet in colour, dry and lively.
Terroir and origin
The Binardes plot lies on the Côte Blonde, below the village of Tupin. The terraces sit on granite, quartz and orthogneiss. Maison Stephan farms 4.5 hectares on the steepest slopes of the Côte-Rôtie, largely by hand, using horses for soil work and winches on the most difficult sections. Yields are 30 hl/ha.
Grape variety and vinification
A blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier from organically farmed vines, selected through massale selection and planted between 1986 and 1994. Hand harvesting is followed by semi-carbonic maceration, gentle pressing and twelve months of ageing in barrel; the house uses used oak barrels sourced from the Jupille forest. Bottling takes place at the estate, unfined, unfiltered and without added sulphites.
On the palate
Very fresh, juicy and lively, carried by violet fruit of blackberry, damson, cassis and blueberry. The nose adds liquorice and violet, while the palate shows a touch of olive tapenade and pronounced minerality. Oak and meaty notes are absent; the texture remains silky and balanced.
Distinctive features
Jean-Michel Stephan has worked without oenological additives since 1997; since 2017 his son Romain has co-run the estate. This wine shows the clarity and energy this approach can unlock on a steep slope of the Côte-Rôtie.
