About this wine

Character

A southern-styled white wine with weight and fullness, kept in balance by acid structure and minerality. Dry, with a restrained 12.0% vol. and no oak character whatsoever. Domaine du Coulet in Cornas is known for its Syrah from steep granite terraces; this cuvée shows the estate's white side.

Terroir and origin

The vines stand on the Plateau de Arlettes at 250 metres of altitude within the commune of Cornas, on limestone-clay soil over river pebbles. Matthieu Barret joined his grandfather in Cornas in 1997, took over the vineyards a year later and bottled his first vintage in 2000; today he farms 20 hectares as the seventh generation of his family.

Grape variety and vinification

A cuvée of 50% Marsanne and 50% Roussanne. Barret has farmed biodynamically since 2002, and since 2012 mules and horses have replaced tractors in the vineyards; the vines average 40 to 55 years of age, with yields of 23 hectolitres per hectare. In the cellar the rule is 100% grape, minimal sulphur, no fining, no filtration. Since the 2017 vintage, the estate has dispensed entirely with barriques in favour of concrete.

On the palate

The nose is clearly southern, yet fine and balanced: acacia blossom, lime blossom and its accompanying honey, bergamot, a touch of quince, yellow plum and verbena. On the palate the cuvée turns spicier: fennel, aniseed, liquorice and chamomile alongside fruit, pronounced honey notes and a touch of beeswax. The wine carries weight, finds its footing in acidity and minerality, and finishes with notable length.

Highlights

A white wine from the commune of Cornas, bottled as Côtes du Rhône AOP. Biodynamic since 2002, no new oak, no oenological additives, sulphur added only at bottling. Green cover around the vineyards promotes biodiversity.
