About this wine

Character

A vintage champagne that sets dark Pinot fruit against the coolness of the limestone soil. Dry, cool and distinctive, more complex than firm, with good drive and a long, tangy-fruity finish.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the single vineyard En Barmont in Les Riceys, where Pinot Noir stands on red clay over Kimmeridgian limestone. Les Riceys is the only village in Champagne permitted to produce three appellations: champagne, still wine and Rosé des Riceys. The Horiot family has cultivated vines here since the 17th century. Olivier Horiot took over his father Serge's estate in 1999 and immediately converted it to organic farming.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir, pressed as a white. Harvested on 14 September 2019, spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts, the base wine aged in oak on the lees. Bottled for secondary fermentation on 31 July 2020, disgorged with no dosage after more than four years on the lees on 18 November 2024, hence Brut Nature. No fining or filtration. The cellar is run by Marie Horiot.

On the palate

Cherry and dark berries meet cider apple and blood orange, along with a piquant, refreshing bitterness. Cherry stones lend a fine tannin and extra grip, while the mousse stays fine and well integrated. On the nose, red apple with skin, mellow stone fruit, a hint of cider and buttery pastry over delicate yeast notes.

Food pairings

With oysters, scallops or marinated salmon trout. Equally with roasted quail breast, Bresse chicken or aged Comté.

Special features

The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2010, with the soils ploughed by horse. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately, and sulphur use is kept to a minimum. All of the house's champagnes go into the bottle with no dosage.
