About this wine
Character
A white wine of real weight: 14.5% vol., off-dry, with generous sweetness held in shape by fine acidity and a saline note. Young, the Hengst shows freshness; with bottle age it gains softness and maturity.
Terroir and origin
The Hengst near Wintzenheim is one of six grand cru sites where Domaine Albert Mann cultivates vines. The soil is marl with some sandstone. The estate is based in Wettolsheim; its 25 hectares are spread across nearly a hundred parcels, each with its own character.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Gris. Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, brothers-in-law, split the work: Maurice the cellar, Jacky the vineyards. Since 1997 they have farmed biodynamically, using horses instead of tractors on the steepest slopes so the soil doesn't compact and the roots can reach deeper. Over decades they have observed which grape variety suits which site: in the Hengst, it is Pinot Gris.
On the palate
The nose offers ripe peach, pineapple compote, dried apricots and acacia blossom, underscored by honey, candied ginger and anise. The palate is powerful and creamy, with fine spice and intense fruit; minerality, fine acidity and salt lend it structure and facets.
Food pairing
A wine that seeks out intense dishes, ideally with spice and acidity: Thai curry with coconut milk, foie gras, Munster or blue cheese.
Special features
In 2012 the Barthelmé brothers were named Winemakers of the Year. Antoine, the son, now works alongside them. The 2020 can be enjoyed today, but gains softness with further bottle age.
