About this wine

Character

A mineral-driven white wine that holds richness and freshness together. In its youth, a smoky note, typical of this terroir, sits above the fruit. Alongside it, wet stone, apple cider, grapefruit and pear, with a little honey and wax. Still somewhat closed, yet already very appealing.

Terroir and origin

Clos Windsbuhl is the highest vineyard in the village of Hunawihr; from the top, Ribeauvillé, Zellenberg, Riquewihr and Beblenheim come into view. The soil consists of shell limestone and limestone. In 2017, a brief cold spell led to a late, chaotic flowering and thus low yields. What at first seemed a problem delivered healthy, ripe grapes at harvest with an excellent sugar-acid balance.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure varietal Pinot Gris. Fermentation proceeded very slowly, but evenly and consistently, after which the wine matured for 18 months in barrel on full lees. 7.7 g/l residual sugar is balanced by 3.8 g acidity and a pH of 3.3; the yield was 23 hl/ha, alcohol 13.0% vol.

On the palate

Full and juicy, but above all very lively, with bright pome fruit and citrus. Apple, pear and quince bring flesh, skin and a touch of must, while the lees leave a fine sweetness. Above this, enormous tension, minerality and lively acidity carry through to an intense, savoury and long finish.

Food pairings

Grilled quail with harissa and sumac, roasted duck with soy and hoisin sauce on five-spice pancakes, or green Thai curry.

Special features

For Olivier Humbrecht, 2017 ranks among the three best vintages since the estate's founding in 1959. The first Frenchman to hold the title Master of Wine converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996; Clos Windsbuhl is a monopole of the domaine. The magnum format further slows the wine's maturation.
