About this wine
Character
The Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2017 is a dry white wine from a steep volcanic slope in Alsace, combining cool austerity with richness. Its 14.0% vol. carries the wine without weighing it down.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann rises above the small town of Thann and, with a gradient of 68 degrees, is the steepest vineyard site in Alsace. Across 5.5 hectares of volcanic rock, the vines grow in soil strewn with volcanic chunks and jagged stones; ploughing is done with a winch. Over time, the 54-year-old roots have given the grapes a character all their own, and this intricate terroir benefits especially from biodynamic work.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Gris. The harvest at the Rangen on 26 September brought the vintage to a close. Fermentation proceeded vigorously and quickly through to the complete exhaustion of the sugar, followed by 18 months of ageing in barrel on the full lees. The wine has 1.6 g/l residual sugar, 3 g acidity and a pH of 3.6, with a yield of 26 hl/ha.
On the palate
Shortly after opening, the wine smells intensely of gunpowder; once the smoke clears, notes of blossom, bright citrus and curry spice emerge, before it turns more stony and earthy. On the palate it is full-bodied and juicy, with clear citrus fruit, smoky-flinty notes, fine creaminess and silky tannin. Alongside these, stony spice, salt, iodine, wax and resin. The length is outstanding.
Food pairings
Steamed sole on lobster bisque with fennel seed, saddle of hare with mushroom ragout and white wine pears, or asparagus risotto with saffron.
Special features
Bottled as a magnum of 1500 ml. For Olivier Humbrecht, 2017 ranks among the three best vintages since the estate's founding in 1959; frost and hail limited the harvest to an average yield of under 20 hl/ha.
