About this wine

Character

A dense, dry-vinified Grand Cru at 14.0% vol. that holds richness and tension at once. The fruit is ripe, kept in shape by a saline edge. A wine built to age.

Terroir and origin

The Rangen de Thann rises above the small town of Thann at gradients of up to 68 degrees, making it Alsace's steepest vineyard site. Its 5.5 hectares hold volcanic rock, schist and greywacke, which store the day's warmth. The Clos-Saint-Urbain is the walled section of this site, owned by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. Of the estate's 42 hectares, 11.5 hectares lie across six Grand Cru sites; horses work the steepest plots.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Gris. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to earn the title Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996. Yields run 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, the must ferments spontaneously, and the wine then rests on its lees for at least six months. Before release, it ages one to two years in the cellar.

On the palate

Ripe yellow peach, dried apricot and honey, joined by ginger, saffron and a smoky note. The texture is broad, the acidity draws it in, and the finish stays saline and spicy.

Food pairings

Foie gras with quince compote, grilled turbot with brown butter, veal sweetbreads, richly spiced game birds such as pheasant or duck, and mature Munster.

Special features

The Humbrecht family have been winegrowers since 1620; since 2019, Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined as the eleventh generation. In 1981, Léonard Humbrecht became the first winegrower in France to install cooling systems in wooden barrels.
