About this wine
Character
A powerful Riesling that demands time. In its youthful stage it shows reserved and needs air to release its fruit. Those drinking it now should decant it for several hours and pour it into a sufficiently large glass; a few days after opening it continues to gain expression. It has earned a few more years of cellaring.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Cru Brand lies near Turckheim and lends the wine granitic minerality. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms 42 hectares, of which 11.5 hectares lie across six Grand Cru vineyards. Horses are once again working the steep parcels.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Riesling from biodynamic viticulture: Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares in 1996. Yields sit between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare, at least six months of lees contact gives the wines their texture, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. 12.5% vol., off-dry.
On the palate
An interplay of sweet, saline and tart that engages the palate. Carrying through most clearly is the citrus fruit from the nose, borne by an invigorating freshness and a taut mineral backbone.
Food pairings
With turbot with beurre blanc and small potatoes, with Hokkaido pumpkin quiche Lorraine and with carrot-chia dumplings with baked banana.
Distinctive features
The 3000-millilitre double magnum gives this still-young vintage the larger vessel its long development calls for. The Humbrecht family has been growing wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working alongside them as the eleventh generation.
