About this wine
Character
A powerful yet approachable Alsatian Riesling that holds fruit, spice and saline minerality in tension. The delicate residual sweetness wraps around the mineral core and the acid backbone without ever making the wine taste sweet: 13.5% ABV, dry.
Terroir and origin
The Brand site near Turckheim gives this Riesling a granite-driven minerality. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms 42 hectares, 11.5 of which lie across six Grand Cru sites. On the steepest slopes, horses are once again used for cultivation, with yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Riesling grown biodynamically. Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares in 1996. At least six months of lees contact shape the texture, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing.
On the palate
The entry is viscous, the structure has grip, the pressure is powerful. Fine acidity, delicate spice and saline minerality form the frame through which the fruit aromatics refract as if through a prism. The nose is mirrored here: salted lemon, orange blossom oil, bergamot, toasted rice cracker, wet chalk, allspice and red pepper, light tobacco, pear compote and dried mandarin peel. Everything still youthfully lean.
Food pairing suggestions
With turbot chop on sweet potato purée with ginger and beurre blanc, with pork roast braised in milk with sage, and in a vegetarian version with roasted carrots and parsnip in a light basil velouté.
Special features
Bottled in a 3000 ml double magnum. Olivier Humbrecht was the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, the Humbrecht family has grown wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has represented the eleventh generation working at the estate.
