About this wine
Character
A pale, concentrated Riesling with considerable power. The nose is classic for the terroir: smoky and stony, with citrus notes of grapefruit and hops, plus a lightly sweet trace of yeast, wax and honey. The power still feels wrapped in a silk veil, perceptible but held back.
Terroir and origin
The Clos Häuserer near Wintzenheim lies in a small basin at the foot of the Grand Cru Hengst and shares its geological profile. The marl and limestone soil is deep, with the Oligocene bedrock more than a metre below the surface. Sheltered from the wind, the plot becomes very hot in summer and cold in winter.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. Following the frost nights of 21 and 22 April, the very late pruning practised on this plot saved most of the buds, which sat a metre above the ground; the yield nonetheless remained at 38 hl/ha. Harvest of the Rieslings began on 11 September. The wine fermented slowly but sufficiently: 7.8 g/l residual sugar, 4.5 g acidity, pH 3.05, 12.5% vol. Sulphur use at the estate is always kept moderate.
On the palate
The power is confirmed immediately. At first the wine feels relaxed, with fresh grapefruit and lime, remarkably clear and precisely defined. Beneath lies a smoky, mineral core. Transparency, precision and great length define this vintage; ageing potential runs to 15 years and beyond.
Food pairings
With skin-grilled salmon, spring vegetables and beurre blanc nantais, with grilled turbot fillet with porcini and saffron beurre blanc, and with Indian biryani rice with yoghurt, coriander and curry.
