About this wine
Character
This Riesling needs the decanter. Only with contact to oxygen does the bouquet open up, and what leads is not fruit but almonds, pale nuts, wine lees, smoky nuances and light tobacco. After longer aeration, pomelo, pink grapefruit and small red apples join in, carried by density and depth.
Terroir and origin
Clos Windsbuhl is a monopole site of the domaine, situated very high up and touching the edge of the forest, with a late-ripening climate. The subsoil is ancient sedimentary limestone from the secondary period. In 2015, the vineyard was harvested four weeks after the official picking date in Turckheim. The magnesium-rich soil gives the structure its grainy element and an acidity that occasionally halts fermentation earlier than usual.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Riesling at 12.5% vol., declared off-dry. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares biodynamically; in 1996 he converted the first five hectares, and on the steepest plots, horses work the vines again. Yields lie between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare, the wines rest on the lees for at least six months and don't leave the cellar before one to two years of ageing.
On the palate
Striking, very dry and precise. The crystalline salinity sets the saliva flowing immediately, the spice is demanding. Nutty and yeasty notes also dominate the picture here, the fruit stays discreet and recalls citrus and apple peel. A few years in the cellar repay the wine with added complexity.
Food pairing suggestions
Risotto with white truffle, turbot in a fennel crust with Riesling-shallot sauce and caviar, or young pheasant on savoy cabbage with smoked bacon and Riesling sauce.
Special features
The double magnum with a 3000 ml capacity. The Humbrechts have been winegrowers since 1620; since 2019, Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working at the estate as the eleventh generation.
