About this wine
Character
A dry Riesling of great density that holds its power in tension rather than in fullness. The magnum format slows maturation even further, giving this 2015 vintage a very long stamina.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann lies above the small town of Thann in southern Alsace and drops away at a 68-degree incline, the steepest vineyard site in Alsace. On 5.5 hectares of volcanic rock, wines of mineral intensity are produced here. On the steepest plots, horses are once again used for the work, and yields lie between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
A single-varietal Riesling, matured by Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine. At least six months of lees contact give the wine its texture, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. Alcohol remains at 13.0% vol.
On the palate
Deep golden yellow in the glass, with ripe citrus fruit and yellow stone fruit on the nose, underscored by smoke and flint. The palate entry is dry and taut, the acidity carries the wine far, and the finish remains volcanic and demanding.
Food pairings
With scallops and turbot with morel sauce, as well as with Bresse pigeon. Those who prefer something more powerful should pair it with Munster cheese.
Special features
The Humbrecht family has been growing wine since 1620. Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares in 1996, followed in 2002 by the estate's Demeter certification; since 2019, Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working there as the eleventh generation.
