About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling that does two things at once: it holds itself back while still expanding broadly. Multilayered, dense, and still far from drinking maturity for its age.

Terroir and origin

The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, with a 68-degree incline, is Alsace's steepest vineyard site, rising above the small town of Thann across 5.5 hectares of volcanic rock. The Clos-Saint-Urbain is Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's share of it, one of the estate's six Grand Cru sites across a total of 11.5 hectares. Horses are once again working the steepest parcels.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Riesling, vinified dry, 13.0% ABV. At least six months of lees contact give the wine its texture, yields stand at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of maturation. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996.

On the palate

The first sip coats the mouth with fine, ripe tannin. The fruit stays minimalist, almost austere, the acidity is wide-spanning and underpinned by rich minerality. Despite the warm vintage, the wine has remained lean, yet the mouthfeel is full.

Food pairings

Smoked tofu with sesame, wakame seaweed and yuzu ponzu for the savoury side, pikeperch fillet on creamy leeks with mandarin oil and sesame for the citrus notes, glazed veal sweetbreads on rutabaga-vanilla purée for the texture.

Special features

The 3000 ml double magnum is a format for long patience. When young, the wine deserves decanting and at least two hours of air. Better still: cellar it.
