About this wine

Character

The Eichhorn DOC 2024 by Manincor is a single-varietal Pinot Blanc from South Tyrol that stays reticent in its youth. The fruit remains disciplined, with extract, structure and a mineral foundation setting the tone. A wine against which the variety can be measured.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the Eichhorn single vineyard of Tenuta Lieben Aich near Terlan, on a southwest-facing slope at around 300 metres above sea level. The microclimate is warm and airy, the soils sandy-loamy and well-draining, underlain by weathered porphyry rock.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Pinot Blanc, known as Weissburgunder in South Tyrol, from biodynamically farmed vines, hand-harvested. After destemming, the must stays in the press for about twelve hours to draw aroma and structure from the skins. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with the vineyard's own yeasts in wooden casks, after which the wine ages around eight months on fine lees in wood. 13.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

Pale yellow with green highlights. On the nose, apple and pear stay restrained, joined by a touch of citrus and a hint of pineapple; borage, chervil and lemon balm add vegetal accents. The entry is taut, the tannin firm, the wine bone-dry with an invigorating bitter note. Ripe acidity works in the background, while the impulses come from extract and structure.

Special features

Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg took over Manincor in 1991 and converted the estate to biodynamic farming in 2005; Helmuth Zozin has been estate director since 2008. The cellar is built into the slope and works by gravity rather than pumps, with the cool rock keeping temperatures constant.
