About this wine

Character

A pure, clearly defined Tinto Fino with cool acidity and fresh tannin, showing no oak. Fresh violet in the glass, with violet on the nose, followed by black cherry and cranberry, beetroot, black tea and a hint of balsamic.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the La Emilia, La Huelga, Astrales, Jaime and Sandelaisa plots in Sotillo de la Ribera, on the northern edge of the Duero valley. The vineyards lie between 830 and 850 metres in altitude, the vines rooted in chalky-marly and above all clay soils. Cold nights on the Castilian plateau keep the acidity lively.

Grape variety and vinification

Tempranillo, known as Tinto Fino in the Ribera del Duero. After a cool pre-fermentation maceration, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously, with the vineyard's own yeasts and deliberately minimal extraction. This is followed by five months of ageing in cement tank. 14.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

Juicy, crunchy dark fruit, with a few touches of cinnamon and a cool acidity. The tannin feels fresh and grippy, the wine both fleshy and austere at once.

Food recommendations

With snails with tomato, chorizo and pancetta, with white beans and quail or with potato-saffron soup with parsley root chips.

Highlights

Four siblings run Bodegas Félix Callejo: José Félix and Noelia in the cellar, Cristina and Beatriz in sales. Their 55 hectares lie between 830 and 930 metres, cover crops between the rows limit yield, and harvest begins early for crunchier fruit and more moderate alcohol. In 2021, Tim Atkin named the house's winemaker "Winemaker of the Year". This bottle is a magnum of 1500 ml.
